Original German pre WW1 Baden Field Service Decoration (Felddienst-Auszeichnung) / 1839-1871, THE AWARD IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH ATTRACTIVE FINISH, ON NEW RIBBON, A FINE EXAMPLE OF A RARE AWARD 

HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Baden Field Service Decoration (Felddienst-Auszeichnung), 1839-1871 - Circular cannon bronze medal with integral bar for ribbon suspension; the face with a crowned griffin rampant, a sword in its right hand, a shield bearing the arms of Baden in its left, above a cannon and cannon balls on a plinth, inscribed above ‘FÜR BADENS EHRE’ (for Baden’s Honour), signed ‘K’ at the base of the shield (for the medallist Ludwig Kachel, 1791-1878, chief engraver of the Baden Mint from 1836 and President of the Baden Kunstverein for 20 years from 1846); the reverse inscribed ‘LEOPOLD FÜR TREUEN DIENST IM KRIEGE’ (Leopold for Loyal Service in War) within a circular wreath of oak. The Decoration was instituted on 27 January 1839 by Grand Duke Leopold and was awarded as a general service medal and for specific campaigns. On 7 September 1866 Grand Duke Friedrich I instructed that, in the latter case, ribbon bars were awarded to denote the campaign concerned and there were 18 different bars in all. It was awarded retrospectively for campaigns as far back as the Napoleonic Wars of 1805 and was last issued in 1871.
